Abbott Paces Golf to Win at Albertus Magnus


NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In its first-ever varsity dual match, the Albertus Magnus College men's golf team fell to visiting Mitchell College on Friday afternoon at Alling Memorial Golf Course.

The Mariners carded a team-total of 345 to top the Falcons aggregate score of 420 on the par-72 6,248-yard track. Mitchell's Andrew Abbott topped teammate Matt Shea by two strokes to earn low medalist honors. Abbott fired a six-over 78 and Shea shot an 80.

The low scorer for the hosts came from Aaron Macchia with an 87. After the front nine, Macchia settled into a groove and played the back in just two strokes over par. On the day, the third-year righty carded a trio of birdies.

Rounding out the top-five were Matt Grudgen and Ryan Swarts of the Mariners. Grudgen entered the clubhouse with a 91 and Swartz was five shots behind at 96. Andres Sprick rounded out the scoring for Mitchell at 99.

Falcon Zach Schatz finished his first competitive round of the fall with a 98. Schatz had one par on the day and it came on the par-4 fifth. Rounding out the scoring for Albertus were Tyler Donnan (108), Anthony Pellegrino (127) and Elijah Thomas (136).

Mitchell returns to action on Monday, September 14 against Newbury College.
