Golf Tied for 17th After First Round at Elms


EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. -- The Mitchell College men's golf team is tied for 17th place after the first day of play at the Elms Fall Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Elmcrest Country Club.

The Mariners turned in a team score of 352 and are tied with Purchase College in the 20-team field. Freshman Andrew Abbott is tied for 19th overall after shooting a seven-over-par 77 to lead the Mariners. Matt Shea (83), Matt Grudgen (95), Ryan Swartz (97) and Andres Sprick (103) rounded out the scoring on the day for the Mitchell squad.

Occidental College leads the field after posting a 297 in the opening round. Babson College (304) and Salem State University (306) are within striking distance while UMass Dartmouth (307) and Endicott College (309) round out the top five teams.

The Elms Fall Invitational will conclude with a final round of 18 holes on Sunday at Elmcrest.
