Men's Golf Opens Season with Runner-Up Finish

GROTON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College men's golf team opened the 2018 season with a runner-up finish at the Mitchell Invite I on Friday afternoon at Shennecossett Golf Course.

The Mariners shot a team round of 330, matching their low round from all of last season. Wentworth Institute of Technology took the top spot with a team round of 306 while Eastern Nazarene College (337) and Albertus Magnus College (384) rounded out the field.

Eastern Nazarene's Michael Dietz carded five birdies en route to individual medalist honors, finishing with a one-over-par round of 72. Wentworth's Sean L'Italien finished two shots back to secure runner-up status.

Nick Knisel and newcomer Sam Gaboury each shot rounds of 81 to lead the Mariners. Michael McCarthy also made his collegiate debut with a round of 83, and Michael Izzo shot 85 to round out the Mitchell scoring. McCarthy and Izzo each carded a pair of birdies on the day.

Mitchell will next compete at Emmanuel College on Wednesday, September 12.
