Men's Golf Sets Records in Runner-Up Finish at Emmanuel

BOSTON - The Mitchell College men's golf team broke records en route to another runner-up finish at the Emmanuel College Invitational on Wednesday afternoon at William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park.

The Mariners turned in a round of 311, shattering the school record for the lowest team round in the Division III era. The previous record of 330, which Mitchell tied in the 2018 season opener, was originally set by the 2017 squad at the Westfield State-Brett Williamson Invitational.

Three Mitchell golfers carded rounds in the 70s for the first time in school history. Freshmen Sam Gaboury and Michael McCarthy led the way with rounds of 75 and 76, respectively, while junior Michael Izzo shot a 79. The last time a pair of Mariners finished with rounds in the 70s was in 2008 at the Blazers Invitational, with Matt Burke shooting 75 and Mike Lepore recording a 78.

Junior Nick Knisel rounded out the Mitchell scoring with an 81 while freshman Christopher Ronzello checked in at 89.

Despite the record-setting day, the Mariners finished second to Suffolk University, which logged a team round of 303. Wentworth Institute of Technology placed third at 314 while host Emmanuel took fourth at 347.

Mitchell will next host the Mitchell Invite II on Wednesday, September 19 at Shennecossett Golf Course. First tee time is slated for noon.
