Men's Golf Sweeps NECC Weekly Honors

MARSHFIELD, Mass. – Two Mitchell College student-athletes were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference for the sport of men's golf, as released by the league on Monday morning.

Junior Nick Knisel was named NECC Golfer of the Week and freshman Sam Gaboury was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week. Knisel earned the honor for the first time in his career while Gaboury garnered recognition for the third straight week.

The duo helped the Mariners post a pair of team wins last week. After logging runner-up finishes in the first two events of the season, Mitchell shot 311 to finish in first place at the Mitchell Invite II. The Mariners then defeated Albertus Magnus College in a head-to-head showdown.

Knisel finished as the individual medalist at the Mitchell Invite II, firing a career-low round of 75 that included four birdies and nine pars. After a rough start on the first hole, he played the rest of the course at even par en route to the victory. Later in the week, he shot an 85 as the Mariners defeated Albertus Magnus.

Gaboury tied for third overall with a round of 78 at the Mitchell Invite II. He then shot an 80 at Albertus Magnus—the low round by a Mitchell golfer—to finish as runner-up in the individual standings.

The Mariners will next compete at the NECC Championship on September 29-30 at Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston, MA.
