Men's Golf in Second Place after First Round of NECC Championship

WEST BOYLSTON, Mass. -- The Mitchell College men's golf team sits in second place after the first round at the 2018 New England Collegiate Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon at Wachusett Country Club.

Springfield College leads the field of five teams after a team round of 305 to open the tournament. The Mariners trail the Pride by 16 shots after putting up a team round of 321, the lowest ever by a Mitchell squad in the conference tournament. Elms College (323), Eastern Nazarene College (350) and Dean College (382) round out the field of teams.

Springfield's Mike Strong leads the pack of 24 golfers after posting a one-over-par round of 73. The Pride have four golfers among the top five on the leaderboard.

Michael Izzo led the Mariners with a round of 79 and sits in a three-way tie for fourth place. His round included three birdies, tying for the most on the day. Nick Knisel and Sam Gaboury each carded rounds of 80 and are tied for seventh. Michael McCarthy rounded out the scoring with an 82 and sits in 13th place, while Christopher Ronzello is tied for 18th after a round of 91.

The NECC Championship concludes with a final round of 18 holes on Sunday at Wachusett Country Club.
