McCarthy Leads Men's Golf at Mitchell Invite

GROTON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College men's golf team finished third out of three teams at the Mitchell Invite I on Thursday afternoon at Shennecossett Golf Course.

Wentworth, which had four golfers turn in a round of 80 or better, captured the team title with a total of 308. Dean College finished second at 333 while the Mariners turned in a score of 346.

Wentworth's Sean L'Italien earned individual medalist honors by firing a four-over par 75, besting teammate Nicholas Kurtz and Mitchell's Michael McCarthy by a stroke. McCarthy was steady throughout the round, carding nothing worse than a bogey and finishing with one birdie on the day. He completed the back nine in one-over par.

Nick Knisel finished a shot behind McCarthy at 77 and enjoyed a strong finish to his round. After drilling a 50-foot birdie putt on the penultimate hole, he carried that momentum to 18 where he finished his day with the lone eagle of the tournament.

Michael Izzo (92) and Christopher Ronzello (101) rounded out the scoring for the Mariners while Jakob Margetta shot 121.

Mitchell returns to action against Eastern Nazarene College on Wednesday, September 18 at South Shore Country Club.
