Men's Golf Tops Albertus Magnus in Playoff

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Mitchell College men's golf team took a head-to-head match against Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday afternoon at New Haven Country Club, wrapping up the team victory in a playoff after 18 holes failed to produce a winner.

Mitchell's Nick Knisel took home medalist honors with a round of 75, matching the low round of his career. He bested Albertus Magnus' Ryan Sember by a single shot.

After both teams turned in scores of 342, the top two players from each side returned to the first tee to replay the par-4 opening hole. The tiebreaker was decided by the lowest combined score for the two-man team, with the duo of Knisel and Michael McCarthy matching up against Sember and David Aquavia. Both Mariners parred the hole--with McCarthy draining a difficult 12-foot putt after scrambling to the green--while one of the Falcons took bogey.

McCarthy finished with a round of 81 while Christopher Ronzello and Michael Izzo rounded out Mitchell's score with rounds of 92 and 94, respectively.

Mitchell will next host the Mitchell Invite II on Thursday, September 26 at noon at Shennecossett Golf Course.
