Golf Finishes Runner-Up at Eastern Invitational

NORTH WINDHAM, Conn. – After a 540-day layoff, the Mitchell College men's golf team opened the 2020-21 season at the Eastern Invitational on Thursday afternoon at The Windham Club.

Rhode Island College defeated Mitchell, 309-352, for the team title over the 6,435 yard, par-72 layout. The host Warriors had two players compete but did not field a full team. It was the season-opener for all three programs.

The Anchormen took the top three spots and junior Justin Lavoie shared the fourth spot with ECSU's Andrew Gromko. Sophomore medalist Anthony Loiselle edged sophomore teammates William Niles and Nate Chhim for first place with a four-over-par 76. Niles and Chhim shot five-over par 77s and Lavoie and Eastern's Jonah Dupuis were three shots off the pace with seven-over-par 79s.

Playing with Dupuis and Niles, Mitchell junior Michael McCarthy led the Mariners with a seventh-place finish and was followed in order by three teammates. McCarthy carded an 11-over-par 83. Newcomer Shamus McLean carded an 86 in his collegiate debut while Nick Knisel finished with a 90. Jakob Margetta (93) and Jared Hoover (115) rounded out the scoring for the Mariners.

Mitchell will next host Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday, April 14 at Shennecossett Golf Course.
