McCarthy Nabs Honors as Golf Finishes Fourth at MASCAC

SOUTHWICK, Mass. - Westfield State University claimed the 2020-21 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Golf Championship for the third time in program history Wednesday at The Ranch Golf Club.

The Owls posted a combined team score of 309 to top the field by 22 strokes. Worcester State and Springfield each scored a 331 on the day as the Lancers edged the Pride on a tie-breaker to claim second.

Mitchell College took fourth in the team standings with a 335 while Salem State (336), Elms (348), and Eastern Nazarene (393) rounded out the field.

The Owls' Matteo Godek earned top individual honors with a one-over-par 73 score. Joining Godek on the All-MASCAC first team was Westfield State's J.J. Newcombe and Brandon Smith, Mitchell's Michael McCarthy, and Springfield's Corey Roya.

McCarthy becomes just the third Mitchell golfer to earn all-conference first team status, joining Sam Gaboury (2018) and Mike Lepore (2008). 

McCarthy fired a four-over-par round of 76 and finished tied for third overall, three shots behind the winner. Nick Knisel tied for 12th overall at 81 while Shamus McLean tied for 19th at 87. Jakob Margetta carded a 91 to round out the scoring for the Mariners while Jared Hoover posted a 103.

Worcester State's Henry Bruckner and Connor Anderson, Eastern Nazarene's Matt Cawthorne, and Salem State's Max Emmerich and Aaron Paskowski all earned All-MASCAC second team honors.

Bruckner was named the MASCAC Rookie of the Year after finishing with a mark of 77 while Springfield's Joe Eadie was voted the MASCAC Coach of the Year for the second-straight year.
