Three Mariners Earn All-Conference Honors at MASCAC Championship

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Mitchell College finished third at the 2021 MASCAC Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday afternoon at Berkshire Hills Country Club.

The Mariners shot 319 as a team and slipped down a spot on the leaderboard, finishing behind Salem State University (467) and Springfield College (482) with a two-day total of 484. Salem State's Ethan Doyle, who started the day three shots off the individual lead, carded a three-under-par round of 71 to overtake teammate Brian Cannata for medalist honors.

Mitchell had three golfers finish in the top 10 to earn all-conference recognition. Both Michael McCarthy and Nick Knisel finished in the top-five to secure all-conference first team accolades, while Shamus McLean nabbed all-conference second team honors. It marked the first time in school history that three players have received all-conference recognition in the same season.

McCarthy and Knisel also become the first Mitchell golfers to earn all-conference honors for the second time in their careers. McCarthy was a first team All-MASCAC selection last season while Knisel was a second team All-NECC pick in 2017.

Both McCarthy and Knisel shot rounds of 78 (+4) on Tuesday to finish in third and fourth place, respectively. McLean recorded the low round for the Mariners on the day, shooting 77 (+3) to finish in a two-way tie for sixth. McCarthy and McLean each carded three birdies in the final round, trailing only Doyle's five. Jack Hayes rounded out the scoring for the Mariners, finishing tied for 24th overall with a final round of 86 (+12).

The two-day tournament was forced to make several changes due to heavy rain. The opening round was limited to just nine holes, while the final round saw all golfers play the back nine twice.

Mitchell will next compete at the Blazer Invitational on October 9-10.
