First Day of GNAC Men's Golf Championship Suspended Due to Darkness

HAMDEN, Conn. - Mitchell College sits in eighth place after the first round of play at the 2023 GNAC Men's Golf Championship, which was held on Monday afternoon at New Haven Country Club (Par-70, 6560 Yards). Due to darkness, the final group will have to complete the 18th hole on Tuesday morning before the second round of play begins.

With one golfer waiting to finish the opening round, the Mariners (+101) trail seventh place Elms College (+93), while New England College (+45) resides in the top spot. Host Albertus Magnus College rounded out the day with a team score of 331 (+51), currently good for second overall, while Norwich University commands third place (+58) with one golfer waiting to complete the first round.

Michael Keefe of Dean College leads the field of 40 golfers heading into the final round, posting a six-over-par round of 76.

Seniors Shamus McLean (Groton, Conn.) and Jack Hayes (New Milford, Conn.) paced the Mariners with a round of 84, good for a 12th place tie. Junior Micheal Thompson (Hamden, Conn.) ended the day in 35th place after carding round of 106 (+36). Senior Luke Sullivan (Shelton, Conn.) finished right behind Thompson with a score of 107 (+37), while freshman Jackson Rappel (+50) has one hole remaining before the final round kicks off.  

The group yet to finish will return to New Haven Country Club on Tuesday, October 10th to play the 18th hole at 9:30 a.m. Following the conclusion of the first-18, the teams will be re-paired with the second round set to tee off at 10 a.m. Tomorrow's second round of the GNAC Golf Championship will determine which team will claim the conference crown and be named 2023 GNAC Golf Champion. The conference champion will earn the league's automatic qualifier into the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship in the spring.
