McLean Secures Top-10 Finish at GNAC Men’s Golf Championship

HAMDEN, Conn. – Mitchell College senior Shamus McLean (Groton, Conn.) finished tied for eighth place in the 2023 GNAC Men's Golf Championship, which wrapped up on Tuesday evening after two days at New Haven Country Club (Par-70, 6560 Yards).

After shooting a 14-over-par round of 84 on Monday, McLean bounced back carding a round of 78 on Tuesday, good for a two-day total of 162 (+22). McLean, who began the second day of competition in a tie for 12th place, had a strong Tuesday, producing eight pars and a birdie as he continued to ascend the leaderboard, finishing tied with Albertus Magnus sophomore Shamar Wilson. For his efforts, McLean was named to the All-Conference Second Team and the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Not far behind McLean was fellow senior Jack Hayes (New Milford, Conn.), who finished tied for 14th after firing an 11-over-par round of 81 Tuesday for a two-day total of 165 (+25). Hayes also improved from day one to day two, trimming three strokes off his first round score. Senior Luke Sullivan (Shelton, Conn.) posted a two-day score of 211 (+71) and finished 36th, while Micheal Thompson (Hamden, Conn.) shot a 217 (+77) and Jackson Rappel a 248 (+108) to round out the Mitchell participants.

As a team, the Mariners placed eighth with a total score of 755 (+195). New England College took how the top team honors with a score of 646 (+86), while Norwich University (653, +93) narrowly edged out Albertus Magnus (654, +94) to round out the top three.

Michael Keefe of Dean College earned medalist honors, maintaining his day one spot atop the leaderboard to cap a two-day 11-over-par score of 151.
