LAX Season Ends with Loss at Saint Joseph's


STANDISH, Maine - The MItchell College men's lacrosse team wrapped up its regular season with an 18-7 loss at Saint Joseph's College on Wednesday afternoon at Westerlea Way Field.

Spencer Hunt scored four goals and added five assists in the SJC triumph. Saint Joseph's improved to 10-7 overall while Mitchell finished the season at 2-10.

Early in the second half, Blake Edwards and Elliot LaMarre scored goals just four seconds apart to lift the hosts to an 8-2 lead. The four-second span tied the NCAA DIII Men’s Lacrosse record for fastest consecutive goals scored by the same team.

Luke LaFreniere notched four goals and five groundballs and LaMarre tallied four goals with six groundballs and won 62.5% (10-16) of his face-off attempts for the Monks. SJC keeper Marco Stefano made 12 saves and improved to 5-2 on the season.

Sophomore Aharon Wall, classmate Adam Grillo and junior Steven Barnett all scored two goals apiece for the Mariners while sophomore goaliekeeper Joseph Nott made 14 stops between the pipes.

Hunt opened the game scoring with an unassisted marker 2:10 after the opening whistle and Wall tied the game 1:23 later.

With a goal at the 11:12 mark, LaFreniere sparked a 5-0 SJC surge that allowed the Monks to secure a 6-1 cushion after the first 15 minutes of play. Grillo scored a man-up marker to start the second-quarter scoring at the 14:17 mark, but the record-tying goals followed to lift St. Joe’s to an 8-2 advantage.

St. Joe’s led 9-4 heading into the second half and the teams traded goals for the first 12 minutes of the third quarter, as the Monks held a 12-7 lead after Barnett netted his second goal of the game with 3:28 left in the third stanza. Tookie Amosun put the Monks up by six with 1:02 remaining in the third and Saint Joseph’s scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter en route to earning the 18-7 victory.

Vining scored the game’s final goal, the first marker of his career, with one minute remaining.
Saint Joseph’s held the advantage in shots (51-28), groundballs (59-34), face-offs (20-9) and clear rate (83%-67%) in the victory.
