LAX Loses at UMass Boston

BOSTON – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team dropped a 13-4 decision at the University of Massachusetts Boston on Monday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center Field.

Led by midfielder Pat Driscoll's four goals, UMass Boston rattled off nine unanswered tallies while holding Mitchell scoreless in the second half. With the decision, the Beacons improved to 4-6 overall while the Mariners fell to 6-3.

UMass Boston held a 4-1 advantage after the first 15 minutes of action. Attackman Dean Driscoll netted the first strike for the Beacons at 10:57, but Mitchell knotted the contest, 1-1, two minutes later when junior Adam Grillo finished off a pass from freshman Erik Vasquez. UMass Boston followed up with three unassisted markers, one each from Grady Wick, Rob Uhrig and P. Driscoll to open a 4-1 lead.

The Mariners tallied a goal late in the first period as Vasquez found the net, and then they quickly notched a pair of markers to open the first 1:12 of the second to tie the contest, 4-4. Grillo set up freshman Shane Sullivan just 40 seconds into the frame, and then Grillo followed up with his second goal 32 seconds later. With all the momentum seemingly on Mitchell's side, P. Driscoll stepped up to bury a pair of unassisted strikes over the next 3:38 to give the Beacons some breathing room and spurred what became a 9-0 run. Wick added his second of the game with 5:22 to play to give UMass Boston a 7-4 lead going into halftime.

The Beacons tacked on six more scores over the final 30 minutes while shutting out the Mariners. In the third, attackman Tommy Petitti found D. Driscoll for a marker and then D. Driscoll set up Ryan FitzGerald to make it 9-4. Wick, Uhrig and John Perro tacked on unassisted goals in the fourth period, and finally Uhrig setup P. Driscoll with 5:18 to play to cap the scoring.

Goaltender Anthony Fitti made 13 saves to improve to 2-3 on the season, while freshman goalie Peter Eshenfelder collected 10 saves but fell to 6-3.

Mitchell will next host Daniel Webster College on Thursday, April 14 at 4 p.m.
