LAX Nabs Win in Final Minute at Regis


WESTON, Mass. — The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team scored with less than a minute to play in regulation to pull out a 5-4 victory at Regis College on Wednesday night.

Mitchell freshman Shane Sullivan netted the game-winning goal with 43 seconds remaining on an unassisted effort. The Mariners improved to 8-3 overall on the season.

The Pride (3-5 overall) took the first lead of the game when Billy Stewart converted on a fast break pass from Andrew Goldberg to go up 1-0. The Pride continued to groove on offense taking the second goal of the game when John Basbas found the back of the net on a direct pass from Bradford Hastings. The goal put the Pride up 2-0 in the first quarter. 

The Mariners battled back in the second quarter under the keen shooting skills of freshman Evan Spera, who found the top corner off a pass from classmate Demetre Lyras. The goal was the first of the season for Spera. The Pride., however, answered the Mariners attack with a goal from Hasting to go up 3-1 at halftime.

The Mariners rattled off three unanswered goals in the second half to take away the Pride's lead. Junior Josh Charles started things off by scoring late in the third quarter. Junior Adam Grillo and Lyras chipped in with one goal apiece to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Mariners.

The Pride turned things around late in the fourth quarter when Matt Vogan was able to score a man-up goal on a pass from Hastings. The goal evened the score at four apiece with 3:13 left in the fourth quarter. 

After Sullivan's goal put the Mariners back in front 5-4, the Pride rallied for the last two shots of the game. The first attempt went wide, and freshman goalie Peter Eshenfelder made his 16th save of the night on the final shot to sew up the win for Mitchell.

Mitchell will close out the regular season at home against Rivier College on Wednesday, April 27 at 4 p.m. The Mariners will honor their two seniors during halftime of the contest.
