LAX Drops Season Opener at Curry

MILTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team opened the 2013 season with a 15-6 loss at Curry College on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Curry (1-0 overall) came out strong to start the game, taking a 5-0 lead in the first quarter.  The first goal came just 1:33 into play. John Castellano netted his first of four goals on the night off an assist by Connor Arnold. Less than three minutes later, Andrew Navoni scored an unassisted goal. The Colonels went on to tally three more in the last four minutes of the quarter.  

Four saves by goalie Tim McGonagle held the Mariners scoreless in the stanza. Castellano earned one more goal while assisting on three. Connor McKeon scored back-to-back goals and finished the game with four total. 
 
The second quarter saw Curry outscore Mitchell 3-1 to head into the half with a commanding 8-1 lead. McKeon netted the first two before the Mariners got on the board. At the 10:30 mark, Mitchell junior Demetre Lyras scored his first of two on the afternoon. 

The Colonels answered back before time ran out when Joseph Natale scored unassisted.  McGonagle made seven saves in the first 30 minutes of play while Mitchell junior netminder Peter Eshenfelder stopped six in between the pipes. 
 
Mitchell opened up the scoring to start the second half on an unassisted tally by sophomore Jordan Cook, who finished with a pair of goals. Curry, however, got two more scores by Castellano and McKeon. McKeon's goal came with just two seconds showing on the clock off an assist by Castellano. The Colonels outshot the Mariners 12-7.
 
Timothy McNair replaced McGonagle in net to start the final period. Nine total goals were scored in the final 15 minutes of play, five for Curry and four for Mitchell. The Mariners scored first off a net by Cook. Castellano then tallied next for his fourth and final of the game.

Cook and Lyras each scored their second goals of the game in the stanza while sophomores David Klapp and Tyler Kradas earned their first goals of the season. 
 
Curry was led by Castellano who finished with eight points on four goals and four assists.  Lyras led for Mitchell with two goals and one assist for three total points. 
 
The Colonels outshot the Mariners 43-26. Curry also picked up 39 ground balls and Mitchell recorded 28. On face-offs, the Colonels went 14-for-24 while the Mariners went 10-for-24.
 
McGonagle earned the win in net making 12 saves in 49:07, allowing just two goals. McNair let up four goals, making two stops in 10:53. Eshenfelder made 15 saves in goal for Mitchell in the loss. 

Mitchell will next host Becker College on Saturday, March 2 at 1:00 p.m.
