LAX Powers Past SUNY Cobleskill

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team came away with an 11-7 victory over SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday night at New London High School.

The Mariners (6-2 overall) never trailed en route to their third straight win. Junior Shane Sullivan led the attack with four goals while sophomore Jordan Cook added a hat trick. Mike Janavey paced Cobleskill (2-1 overall) with three goals while Dan Scott chipped in with two scores and an assist.

Mitchell controlled play thanks to another strong performance at the face-off spot, winning 19 of 22 starts. Junior Demetre Lyras, in addition to recording a pair of goals and an assist, went 15-for-16 in face-offs on the night.

Cook scored twice in the opening quarter as the Mariners led 3-1 after the first 15 minutes. Each team added a pair of scores in the second stanza, with Austin Fragale and Janavey tallying for the Fighting Tigers and Sullivan and freshman Kevin Renshaw scoring for the Mariners.

Mitchell led 5-3 at the break and extended the margin to 7-4 in the third quarter. The first of three goals for Sullivan in the half came on a standout play by junior Chris Joy, who entered the game and immediately caused a turnover and scooped up a ground ball. He raced the other way to give the Mariners a fastbreak attempt, passing off to Sullivan in front of the net for an acrobatic, mid-air finish.

The two sides combined for seven goals in the final quarter, but Cobleskill couldn't put together enough offense to claw back into the game. Goalie Eric Randazzo did his best to keep the Fighting Tigers in the game, finishing with 15 saves against 43 total shots. Mitchell's Peter Eshenfelder had 12 stops in goal against 31 shots.

Mitchell will next play at the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday, April 2 at 2:30 p.m. Cobleskill returns to action at Hilbert College on Saturday, March 30 at 2 p.m.
