LAX Falls in Season Opener at Roger Williams


BRISTOL, R.I. -- The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team opened the 2014 season with a 19-4 loss to Roger Williams University on Wednesday afternoon at Bayside Field.

Senior Demetre Lyras scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the Mariners (0-1 overall). Classmate David Klapp and sophomore Dan DiGioia also markers for the visitors. Jon Nessa paced Roger Williams with four goals and a helper while Will Siefert and Mike Hanna each contributed hat tricks.

The Hawks scored the game's first seven goals and never looked back. The Mariners got on the board in the second quarter when Klapp finished off a pass from sophomore Aaron Sladyk. However, Roger Williams netted the final three goals of the half to lead 10-1 at the break.

Mitchell went without a goal in the third quarter but put three in the back of the net in the fourth. Lyras got things started with a man-up goal with 9:44 to go, and DiGioia tallied just seven seconds later. Lyras then added his second goal of the contest with 7:50 remaining, and it would be the last goal for the Mariners on the day.

Freshman goalie JD LeMay faced 34 shots and finished with 15 saves.

Mitchell will next host Anna Maria College on Saturday, March 1 at 1 p.m. The game will be held at New London High School.
