LAX Holds on For One-Goal Win at Becker


LEICESTER, Mass. - Mitchell College held on for 6-5 win over Becker College in New England Collegiate Conference men's lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Senior David Klapp and sophomore Dan DiGioia each scored a pair of goals to lead Mitchell. The win improved the Mariners record to 2-1 (1-0 NECC) while the Hawks fell to 1-1 (0-1 NECC).

Mitchell scored the lone goal of the first quarter when Klapp fed junior Jordan Cook in front of the Hawks net for the 1-0 advantage. Becker tied the game 2:35 into the second quarter when Daniel Johnson scored on a man advantage opportunity. Despite the score being tied, the Hawks took a 24-9 shot advantage into halftime.

The Mariners took a 2-1 lead with just 1:51 remaining in the third period when junior A.J. Fialkowski ripped a shot from 15 yards out to beat Becker goalie Jeffrey Candee. top shelf. Mitchell increased its lead 2:24 into the fourth quarter when Klapp split the Hawks defense with a spin move, making the score 3-1. Becker cut the Mariners advantage in half when Shane Balestracci scored his second goal of the season. 

Mitchell got back-to-back goals from DiGioia to put the Mariners in front 5-2 with 4:17 remaining in regulation. After Daniel Johnson put the Hawks within striking distance at 5-3, Klapp scored what proved to be the game winner 16 second later. The Hawks made things interesting when they received late goals from John DeAngelis and David Deschenes, but the Mariners held on for the 6-5 victory.

Jeffrey Candee made five saves for Becker, while freshman JD LeMay turned away 19 shots.

Mitchell returns to action on Saturday, March 8 when it travels to Lebanon Valley at 1:00 p.m.
