Mariners Fall in 2OT to Mount Saint Vincent

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team suffered a 5-4 setback in double overtime against the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday afternoon at New London High School.

Adrian Go netted the game-winning goal off a feed from Pat McEnaney with 2:19 remaining in the second OT to give the Dolphins (4-1 overall) the victory. McEnaney finished the game with two goals and a pair of assists to lead all scorers. Senior David Klapp led Mitchell (3-3 overall) with three goals while classmate Demetre Lyras added a goal and an assist.

Mount Saint Vincent scored the only goal of the opening quarter, as Mike Puchalski found the back of the net with just 13 seconds remaining in the stanza. The scoring picked up in the second quarter as Lyras and Klapp recorded goals 1:15 apart to put the Mariners in front 2-1. The Dolphins then tied the game behind a power play goal by McEnaney, and both Klapp and McEnaney traded goals in the final 4:09 as the teams went into the halftime break tied at 3-3.

Each side put up only one goal over the final 30 minutes of regulation. Mike McEnaney scored with 1:45 to play in the third quarter to push the Dolphins back in front, and the Mariners didn't tie the game until Klapp completed his hat trick with 1:07 to go in the fourth.

Mitchell's best chance in overtime came after winning the opening face-off of the first extra stanza. The Mariners quickly moved down the field, and a shot by Klapp was denied by Kyle Kalibat on the doorstep of the goal. Freshman goalie JD LeMay was equally stout for Mitchell, recording four of his 15 saves in the overtime.

The Mariners won the opening face-off for the second overtime and called timeout to draw up a play. However, a turnover gave possession to Mount Saint Vincent, and after clearing the ball up the field the Dolphins drew a slashing penalty. It was on the ensuing extra-man chance that Mount Saint Vincent found Go in front for the clean look.

Mount Saint Vincent held a 46-18 edge in shots and a 29-26 advantage in ground balls. Mitchell won 10 of 14 face-offs to balance things out, but the Mariners also committed eight penalties to MSV's two. Kalibat finished the game with five saves in goal for the Dolphins.

Mitchell will next host Regis College on Saturday, March 29 at 1 p.m. Mount Saint Vincent returns to action at home against Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday, March 22 at 1 p.m.
