LAX Rallies Back at Mount Ida but Falls in OT

NEWTON, Mass. – Midfielder Jon Berry scored 13 seconds into overtime to propel Mount Ida College to a thrilling 8-7 victory over non-conference opponent Mitchell College on Wednesday evening. 

With the win Mount Ida improved to 7-4 (4-1 GNAC) while Mitchell dropped to 4-4 (2-0 NECC).

Trailing just 11 seconds into the first quarter off a Mitchell goal by Demetre Lyras, Mount Ida's Zach Rosen quickly knotted things up at one apiece. Shane Sullivan then found teammate Dan DiGioia, who buried home a shot to give the Mariners an early 2-1 advantage after one quarter of play.

Lyras started off the second period with his second goal of the night.  Mount Ida's Ryan Trinque then brought the hosts within a goal at the 12:16 mark of the quarter. Mitchell responded by rattling off consecutive goals from DiGioia and Tyler Kradas to take its biggest lead of the contest at 5-2.

With 22 seconds remaining in the opening half, Trinque struck again on an unassisted marker to bring the Mustangs within two at the break at 5-3.

Mount Ida came out of the break and kept Mitchell at bay, scoring all four goals of the third quarter to take a 7-5 lead. The Mustangs got tallies from Wyatt Sullivan, Berry, J.T. Hoyt and Chad Coehlo in the stanza to pull ahead.

Trailing by two goals heading into the fourth quarter, Mitchell didn't go down without a fight.  Lyras struck again with his third goal of the game and a natural hat trick while teammate David Klapp sent a shot through the legs of Mustang netminder Kyle Cordaro to knot the score at 7-7 with 1:14 remaining in regulation.

In dramatic fashion just 13 seconds into the overtime period, Berry sent a scorching shot past Mitchell keeper JD LeMay for the game winner and the 8-7 victory.

Cordaro recorded the win for Mount Ida improving his record to 7-4 on the year while LeMay took the tough defeat for the Mariners and dropped to 4-4 on the season.

Mount Ida went 16-for-16 on clear attempts while the Mariners managed 15 clears on 25 tries. Face-off specialist Eric Berman went 11-for-17 at the X and grabbed eight ground balls.  Lyras was 6-for-15 on face-offs for the Mariners while LeMay led the way with seven ground balls for the visitors.

Mitchell will next host non-conference opponent SUNYIT on Saturday, April 5 at 4 p.m.
