LAX Falls to Merchant Marine Academy


NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy by a final score of 14-4 on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Field.

USMMA's Geoff Harty led all scorers with five goals and added four assists for a nine-point day. Phil Walker also netted a hat trick and chipped in with two assists while Chris Whitenack and Troy Smith each contributed a pair of scores.

Demetre Lyras finished with two goals to lead Mitchell while Aaron Sladyk and Shane Sullivan each added a score.

USMMA blanked Mitchell in the first half and led 9-0 at intermission. Harty scored four goals in the opening half while Walker netted three, and goalie Alex Peyreigne made four saves to keep Mitchell off the scoreboard.

USMMA led 12-0 late in the third quarter when Lyras finally put Mitchell in the scoring column. Sladyk, Lyras and Sullivan all tallied in the final stanza to complete the scoring for the home team.

Peyreigne finished with five saves in the contest and didn't allow a goal before coming out of the game five minutes into the second half. Kevin Young made five saves in the final 24-plus minutes and allowed four goals. Mitchell goalie JD LeMay faced 57 shots in the contest and finished with 16 saves.

In addition to his three points, Whitenack went 10-for-14 in face-offs and scooped up a game-high six ground balls.

Mitchell (8-6 overall) returns to action on Wednesday, April 23 at Salve Regina University at 7:30 p.m. USMMA (7-6 overall) will close out the regular season at home against Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday, April 26 at 11 a.m.
