LAX Stumbles in Regular Season Finale

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team wrapped up regular season play with a 14-7 loss at Salve Regina University on Wednesday night.

The Mariners (8-7 overall) must now wait to see if they will receive a berth in the ECAC New England Championship.

Mitchell struck first as sophomore Dan DiGioia scored just 1:28 into the contest. Salve Regina wasn't fazed, however, and answered with four straight goals that included a pair by Chad Hollenshade. Junior Jordan Cook squeezed in the final goal of the period with five seconds remaining as the Mariners trailed 4-2 after one.

The Seahawks scored three straight goals in the second quarter before senior David Klapp tallied twice before the break to keep Mitchell in the game. The Mariners trailed 7-4 at intermission despite being outshot 28-14 in the half.

Klapp and senior Demetre Lyras each netted goals in the third quarter, but the Mariners were still outscored 3-2 in the stanza. In the fourth, Salve Regina sealed the victory by scoring the first four goals en route to the 14-7 final.

Klapp finished with four goals to lead the Mariners. Curtis McKeon paced the Seahawks with five goals while Hollenshade and Sharp Jones each added three.

Freshman goalie JD LeMay finished with 21 saves against 59 shots.
