Men's LAX Clipped at Merchant Marine Academy

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy senior Geoff Harty became just the eighth player in USMMA men's lacrosse history to reach the 200-point plateau in his career, as he scored five first-quarter goals to reach the milestone, helping to lead the USMMA to an 18-3 victory over Mitchell College on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium.

Merchant Marine improved to 6-7 overall on the season while Mitchell fell to 5-8.

Harty's fifth tally came with just 14 seconds to play in the opening quarter and capped off a period in which the Merchant Marine outscored Mitchell, 10-1. Five different players scored for USMMA in the first quarter, as freshman Nick Treon had two and classmate Pat Coll, senior Troy Smith and sophomore Chris Whitenack also found the back of the net.

A total of 10 players scored in the victory, including starting goalie Alex Peyreigne, who recorded his first career goal (and second career point) after he made a save late in the second quarter, charged up the field and let a hard shot rip from long range. For Merchant Marine, 12 total players recorded at least one point on the night.

All three USMMA goalies played in the contest, as Peyreigne got the start and played 25:47, making four saves and earning the victory. Freshman JC Phillips came in to relieve the senior and tallied three saves in over 19 minutes of work. Junior Kevin Young closed the game out, playing in the final quarter and stopping three Mitchell shots.

Whitenack was 9-for-10 in faceoffs in the opening quarter and picked up a game-high eight groundballs. On defense, freshman Chris Giordano led all players with four caused turnovers, while classmate Elijah Cherry forced three Mitchell turnovers.

The visitors had all three of their goals come from different players as sophomore McCarthy Brodaski struck first in the first quarter and senior Tyler Kradas and freshman Evan Gennell both scored in the fourth. In goal, sophomore JD LeMay got the start and played 55:21, making nine saves in the losing effort. Back-up Mark Vuolo played the final 4:39 of the second quarter.

Mitchell will close out the regular season at home against Wheelock College on Tuesday, April 28 at 4 p.m.
