LAX Comes Up Short in Second Half at Coast Guard


NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard Academy trailed 5-4 at the half but used eight second-half goals to secure a 12-6, non-conference victory over cross-town rival Mitchell College on Wednesday night at Cadet Memorial Field. 

Ian Logan led the Bears (6-3 overall) with a hat trick that included the eventual game winner in the third quarter. Louis DePaolis had three points with two goals and an assist while Justin Huemme had two goals. Owen LaPorte had a team-high two goals and one assist for Mitchell (2-5 overall) while Dan DiGioia and Jacob Setzko each added a goal and an assist. 

The Bears held the lead with 3:01 to go in the first half as Logan scored his second goal of the game for a 4-3 advantage. However, the Mariners finished the half with momentum by scoring goals 22 seconds apart to slip ahead. LaPorte tallied the first with 2:29 to go and Kyle Marsh scored a man-up goal with 2:07 left to give Mitchell a 5-4 halftime lead. 

In the second half, Coast Guard took the lead back with 10:18 left in the third quarter at 6-5 and never trailed again. The Bears limited the Mariners to only one goal in the final 30 minutes of play.

Trey Johnson (5-2 overall) made one save on seven shots faced for Coast Guard. Mitchell's JD LeMay (2-5 overall) recorded 20 saves against 32 shots, marking the third time this season he's finished with 20 or more stops in a game. 

Coast Guard's defense was stout especially in the second half, causing 12 turnovers with Connor Ellis leading the way with five. As a team the Bears dominated the face-off, winning 20 of 21 with Colin Cashin going 13-for-14 and Dan Fiorvanti a perfect 6-for-6. 

Mitchell returns to action at Daniel Webster College on Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m.
