LAX Claims First Win of 2017 vs. Albertus Magnus


NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the 2017 season on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Albertus Magnus College by a 16-12 final in a non-conference showdown played at Connecticut College.

Mitchell's McCarthy Brodaski scored seven goals and handed out three assists to lead all scorers. Jacob Setzko added a three goals and two assists while Kyle Marsh finished with two goals and two helpers.

Brennan Moore and Greg Buck each netted four goals to pace Albertus. Moore also added three assists while Justin Bennet contributed three goals, two assists and a game-high 20 ground balls. 

The Falcons scored just seven seconds into the game after Bennet won the opening face-off and found Moore for a quick score. The Mariners responded just over two minutes later as Setzko tallied his first of the contest. Brodaski then gave Mitchell the lead with an unassisted effort with 9:11 to play in the quarter.

The Mariners never trailed again, although the score remained close for the majority of the half. Mitchell finally gained some separation by scoring the final three goals of the stanza to take a 6-3 lead into the halftime break. 

Brodaski opened the second-half scoring to bump Mitchell's margin to four, but Albertus netted three of the next four goals to pull back within two. Later in the third, the Mariners led 9-7 when Setzko completed his hat trick with a man-up goal. 

Early in the fourth quarter, an Albertus penalty gave Mitchell a locked-in, man-advantage for a full minute. After a goal by Michael Frosina padded the lead to three, Bennet sparked the Falcons by winning the ensuing face-off and marching in for a man-down score. Moore then tallied 14 seconds later as Albertus trimmed the deficit to 12-11 with 13:21 to go.

Mitchell recovered to score the next four goals—getting two apiece from Brodaski and Jackson Brockwell—to take its biggest lead at 16-11. Bennet added his final tally of the day with 46 seconds remaining, and the Mariners ran out the rest of the clock to secure the victory.

Mitchell goalie JD LeMay finished with 10 saves against 57 shots to pick up his 20th career win. Brian Jordan led all players with seven caused turnovers and scooped up seven ground balls to pace the Mitchell defense.

Albertus goalie Jack Kerner made 15 saves against 55 shots. Bennet won 26 of 31 face-offs in the game to add to his solid stat line.

Mitchell (1-1 overall) will next play at Curry College on Saturday, March 4 at noon. Albertus (1-1 overall) returns to action at Mass. Maritime on Sunday, March 5 at 3 p.m.
