LAX Comes Up Short vs. Rivier


NEW LONDON, Conn. – Rivier University powered to a 15-4 victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Alumni Field.

William Ryan finished with eight goals and one assist to lead the Raiders (3-3 overall). Joe Kelland contributed two goals and two assists while Sean Brady had one goal and four helpers. Goalie Matt Cloutman made eight saves and allowed only two goals.  

McCarthy Brodaski paced the Mariners (1-4 overall) with two goals while Jacob Setzko and Michael Frosina each added scores. Goalie JD LeMay made 14 saves against 39 total shots. 

Rivier led 4-2 after the opening quarter but pulled away in the second stanza, outscoring Mitchell 6-0 en route to a 10-2 halftime advantage. Ryan scored three goals in the period and assisted on another.

McCarthy scored the first two goals of the second half as Mitchell cut the deficit back to six. However, the Raiders didn't allow another goal over the final 22:14 of the game, and Ryan scored three more times before the final buzzer to seal the win.

Rivier's Chris Pennie won 15 of 23 face-offs and finished with three ground balls. The Raiders' man-down unit was also stellar, shutting down all but one of Mitchell's 13 extra-man opportunities. 

Mitchell will next play at Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. River returns to action at Regis College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
