LAX Falls to Regis on Final Day of the Regular Season

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Regis College secured an undefeated New England Collegiate Conference regular season record with a 17-9 victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon in men's lacrosse action at Alumni Field.

The Pride (5-9 overall) wrapped up the regular season with a 4-0 mark in conference play to secure the top seed in the upcoming NECC Championship. Calvin Brault and AJ Karofsky each scored four goals and added two assists to lead the way. Kyle Marsh and Jacob Setzko paced the Mariners (2-9 overall, 1-3 NECC) with three goals apiece.

The first 15 minutes of the contest was tight as each team found the back of the net once. Brandon Mehler provided the game's first goal less than four minutes in off a feed from Nick Romig. Mitchell answered just over two minutes later when Marsh scored with a man advantage to even the score at 1-1.

Regis outscored Mitchell 10-1 in the second quarter to seize control. Karofsky netted a hat trick in the period while Brault and Danny Rancano added two scores apiece.

The Pride led 11-2 at intermission and upped the margin to as many as 12 in the second half. The Mariners held a 5-1 scoring edge in the final stanza, but by that point it was too late.

Regis goalie D.J. Barrile made three saves and allowed two goals in the first half. Tyler Estes took his place for the final 30 minutes and recorded five stops. Mitchell goalie JD LeMay made 13 saves against 48 shots.

The Mariners honored four seniors -- Michael Hartley, Trevor Abbale, McCarthy Brodaski and LeMay -- in a ceremony prior to the game. The group was playing in the final home game of their careers.

Regis and Mitchell will meet in the opening round of the NECC Championship on Wednesday, April 26. The top-seeded Pride will host the fourth-seeded Mariners at a time to be determined.
