Men's LAX Doubles Up Albertus Magnus

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College notched its highest goal total of the season in a 15-7 victory over Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference men's lacrosse match-up at Alumni Field.

Ethan LePain netted a season-high five goals and added three assists to lead the Mariners, who picked up their second straight win and improved to 3-6 on the season. Kyle Marsh added four goals and three helpers while Jade Shields notched a hat trick with a pair of assists.

James May had a hand in all seven Albertus Magnus goals, scoring six and assisting on the other. The Falcons dropped to 1-4 on the year.

After Mitchell fell behind 1-0 in the opening minute of the contest, a goal by Nick Loris tied the score with 6:47 left in the first quarter. LePain then took over, scoring three times over a five-minute stretch as the Mariners carried a 5-2 lead into the second period.

Mitchell scored the first three goals of the second quarter to go up 8-2. Marsh fed LePain for the first tally and later followed by adding two of his own. The Falcons nearly went scoreless in the stanza, but Mykel Stinson scored a man-up goal in the final seconds of the half to make it an 8-3 game at the break.

Albertus Magnus got as close as 9-5 in the third quarter before Mitchell responded with four straight tallies to break the game open. Shields bookended the spurt with a pair of goals to give the Mariners their biggest lead at 13-5.

May added his sixth goal in the early stages of the fourth period, but Shields and Jacob Anderson closed out the scoring for the Mariners. Mitchell held a 66-30 edge in total shots and a 52-24 advantage in ground balls.

Mitchell goalie Marcel Quinlan played all 60 minutes and made nine saves to earn the victory. John Brunetti made the start for the Falcons and stopped 13 shots. Dane Walsh closed out the game and finished with eight saves.

Mitchell will next play at New England College on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m. Albertus Magnus returns to action at Norwich University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
