LAX Ends Season with Win Over Becker

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team ended its season with a 16-7 victory over Becker College on Saturday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference showdown at Alumni Field.

Mitchell's Kyle Marsh scored a game-high five goals and added an assist to punctuate the Senior Day festivities. The freshmen also played a big role in the win, contributing 10 goals on the day led by four from Nick Loris. Brandon Snyder contributed a hat trick while Ethan LePain added two goals and Jake Karnes chipped in one. Jade Shields was active around the cage all game, finishing with a goal and a career-high five assists.

Jack Schneider led Becker (0-10 overall, 0-3 NECC) with five goals while Cameron Sangster added two tallies and a helper. Matthew Guerin also recorded a pair of assists.

The game was close throughout the first half as neither side led by more than one. After an early goal by Marsh put the Mariners on top, the Hawks responded with back-to-back tallies by Schneider and Sangster to take the lead by the end of the opening quarter.

Marsh scored twice during a 36-second stretch in the second period to put Mitchell back in front 4-3. Schneider tied the game with 3:07 left in the half, although LePain scored in the final minute to give the Mariners a 5-4 lead at the break.

Mitchell outscored Becker 7-1 in the third quarter to take control of the game. Loris netted three goals in the period while Snyder added a pair, and the Mariners led 12-5 heading into the final stanza. Loris' last goal of the quarter brought a roar from the crowd as he flicked a shot over his back shoulder for the tally.

The Mariners added four more goals in the final quarter to seal the victory, their first conference win since the 2017 season. Goalie Marcel Quinlan made eight saves while his counterpart, Daniel Whittenburg, recorded 18.

Mitchell held a 43-28 edge in ground balls as Marsh led the charge with nine. The school's all-time leader in the category, Marsh finished his four-year career with 251 ground balls.

Prior to the game the Mariners honored their seniors—Marsh, Adam Liudzius and Nyl Barbier—in a special ceremony. All three got the starting nod in their final collegiate game. Liudzius finished with three ground balls and went 8-for-14 in face-offs while Barbier recorded a pair of shots on goal.

Mitchell ends the season with an overall record of 4-8.
