Knowles, Giovanniello Named LAX Captains

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College men's lacrosse coach Rich Petillo has named junior Desmond Knowles and sophomore James Giovanniello as the team captains for the upcoming 2020 season.

"We are thrilled to have these young men lead our program," said Petillo. "Both of them have worked hard on and off the field and have shown great leadership qualities."

Knowles is a 2016 graduate of Lawrence Central High School where he was a four-year letterwinner and captured the AJ Edwards Award his senior year. He then went on to attend Ancilla College, a two-year institution located in Indiana, where he played lacrosse for one season before the program was discontinued. After transferring to Mitchell for the 2019 spring semester, Knowles went on to start all 12 games as a defenseman for the Mariners. He will return to that position this season and help anchor the defense.

Giovanniello graduated from Curtis High School in 2018 where he was a two-time captain and three-year starter for the Warriors. He came to Mitchell in the fall of 2018 but left to attended John Jay College for the spring semester. He then rejoined the Mariners this past fall, and he will play a prominent role on the field next season at the attack position.

Mitchell opens the 2020 season at Farmingdale State College on Saturday, February 22 at 1 p.m.
