MLAX Drops Season Opener to Farmingdale State

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season with a 26-2 loss to Farmingdale State University on Sunday afternoon.

A total of 11 Rams scored a goal in the contest. Rob Varello potted nine goals and added an assist to lead the way, and Terrence Haggerty contributed four goals and four assists.

Farmingdale State scored the first 11 goals of the game and led 21-1 at intermission. The Rams tallied 13 goals in the second quarter alone, including a man-up score by Varello and a man-down goal by Steven DiCarlo.

The Mariners picked up a goal in each half. Dominick Reposa put Mitchell on the scoreboard with 12:01 left in the first, and John Porcelli netted his first collegiate goal in the final minute of the contest.

Kevin Loonie earned the win in goal for the Rams, making a pair of saves while allowing one goal. Steven Turchetta got the starting nod in his collegiate debut for the Mariners, recording four saves against 25 shots. 

The Rams were dominant at the face-off spot, winning 27 of 31 chances to help boost their offensive attack. Antonino Kaminskey was particularly effective, going 17-for-18 with a game-high 15 ground balls and a goal. 

Mitchell will next host MCLA on Thursday, February 24 at 3 p.m.
