Men's LAX Comes Up Short at Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team dropped an 8-6 decision at SUNY Purchase on Saturday afternoon.

Purchase outscored Mitchell 4-2 in the second half en route to the victory, improving to 3-0 on the season. Ben Erkan and Joe Ely paced the Panthers with two goals apiece, and Will Boes made 16 saves in goal to help secure the win.

Ethan LePain and John Porcelli each netted a pair of goals to lead the Mariners (1-5 overall).

LePain provided the game's first goal just over three minutes into the contest, and the Mariners held the 1-0 advantage until Erkan tied the game in the final minute of the quarter. After the teams traded goals early in the second period, Aidan Messuri scored while Mitchell was playing man down with 8:16 remaining in the half. Porcelli then tacked on his second goal 43 seconds later to give the Mariners their largest lead of the day at 4-2.

The Panthers scored a pair of goals in the final 6:26 of the half to even the score at 4-4 by intermission. In the second half, Erkan won the opening face-off and quickly marched up the field for a goal that put Purchase in front for the first time. The lead was short-lived, however, as LePain answered back 40 seconds later to tie the game at 5-5.

Purchase closed the third quarter with three straight goals to take an 8-5 lead into the final stanza. Ely supplied the final goal of the stretch on an extra-man opportunity off a feed from Tom Goldman.

Boes preserved the three-goal margin by stopping five of six shots on goal in the fourth quarter. Only Desmond Knowles was able to break through for his first goal of the season, making it an 8-6 game with 3:07 left on the clock.

The Mitchell duo of John Grieco and Steven Turchetta split time in the cage. Grieco played the first half and made five saves while Turchetta finished with two stops over the final 30 minutes.

Mitchell will next host Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday, March 15 at 3 p.m.
