Men's LAX Falls to St. Joe's (LI)

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team lost a 20-6 decision to the College of St. Joseph's (Long Island) on Sunday afternoon.

A total of 14 different players scored a goal for the Golden Eagles, who improved to 3-2 on the year. Jack Gilbride led all scorers with three goals and an assist, one of five SJC players with multiple goals in the contest. Desmond Knowles paced the Mariners with two goals. 

The two teams traded scores in the opening minutes of the contest. After Gilbride put SJC on the board just 46 seconds in, Joseph Hayes answered for the Mariners to tie the game at 1-1.

The rest of the half belonged to the Golden Eagles, who scored 13 straight goals to lead 14-1 at intermission. Gilbride netted all three of his goals in the half while Kyle Strayer, Michael Carere and Tim McCann added two each.

In the second half, Mitchell trailed 16-1 before getting back-to-back tallies from Aidan Messuri and Weston Schumacher. Knowles added both of his scores in the fourth quarter, and Dominick Reposa picked up the Mariners' final goal with 5:00 remaining.

Andrew Brust picked up the win in goal for SJC, finishing with four saves against five shots in 30 minutes of action. Anthony DiBene scooped up a game-high nine ground balls while Brett O'Brien caused three turnovers.

Mitchell starter Steven Turchetta made 14 stops against 28 shots in the cage. Dylan DiMeo paced the defense with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Mitchell (2-8 overall) will next play at Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m.
