Men's LAX Shuts Out ENC in Regular Season Finale

WEYMOUTH, Mass. -- The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team ended the regular season with a 17-0 victory over Eastern Nazarene College on Wednesday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference play at Union Point Sports Complex.

The Mariners posted their largest margin of victory since 2016 and their first shutout since 2011. John Porcelli led the offense with a career-high five goals while Aidan Messuri added four goals and two assists. Weston Schumacher finished with a hat trick and James Giovanniello chipped in two goals and three assists, and goalies John Grieco, Steven Turchetta and Ethan Wheeler combined to make 12 saves.

Mitchell outscored ENC 8-0 in the opening quarter to seize control. Porcelli netted three goals in the stanza while Messuri and Schumacher had two apiece.

Desmond Knowles kicked off the scoring in the second period as the Mariners added three more goals before halftime. Both Schumacher and Messuri secured hat tricks before intermission.

Mitchell scored a pair of man-up goals in the second half off the sticks of Joseph Hayes and Jonathan Urrutia. The Mariners went 3-for-7 on extra-man chances for the game.

Bradley Sherwood controlled the face-off spot all day, winning 16 of 19 attempts while scooping up a game-high 10 ground balls. Knowles added eight ground balls and three caused turnovers to pace the Mitchell defense.

Mitchell (4-11 overall, 2-2 NECC) will next face off against New England College on Saturday, May 7 in the 2022 NECC Championship.
