MLAX Defeated by Hartford

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team lost a 24-0 decision to the University of Hartford on Wednesday afternoon.

A total of eight different players scored a goal for the Hawks, who were playing in their first game as a program since 2021. Eric Kelly led all scorers with nine goals and an assist, one of five Hartford players with multiple goals in the contest, and Cam James racked up a game-best 14 ground balls in the win. The Hawks jumped out to a fast start, scoring 11 goals in the opening quarter. The visiting squad tacked on five more goals in the second quarter to carry a 16-0 lead into the intermission.

Cole Zering picked up the win in goals for the Hawks, making five saves during a first half shutout. Andrew Leibold took over in the second half and kept the shutout alive, registering four saves of his own.

Ethan Wheeler (Annapolis, Md.) tallied 20 saves against 44 shots for Mitchell, who managed 12 total shots on offense, nine of them on goal. The Mariners won just six of 28 face-offs, turned the ball over 25 times, and fell short in ground balls 40-18.

Junior Weston Schumacher (Sherborn, Mass.) paced the Mariners with a team-high five shot attempts, three of them on goal, and also recorded four ground balls. Additionally, Dylan Kinsella (Waterbury, Conn.) got three shot attempts off and Raphael Vogt (Montville, Conn.) had four ground balls to go along with four caused turnovers. Ethan Wheeler and Keeano Gonzalez (New London, Conn.) scooped two ground balls apiece.

The Mariners (0-3) will return to action on Saturday, March 4th, when they host Salem State at 1:00 pm. Hartford (1-0) plays next on Wednesday, March 15th, traveling to Randolph College.
