MLAX Comes Up Short Against Salem State

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team came out on the wrong side of a 17-1 decision against Salem State University on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest.

Six different players scored for the Vikings, who were led by Luke Fleming's six goals and one assist. Sean Roach Jr. added four goals and an assist for Salem, while Dakota Girard netted three goals to go along with one assist, and Aidan Hollingsworth notched a pair of goals. Aristomenis Koumentakos added four assists and seven ground balls for the visiting squad. 

The Mariners, who were playing in their second consecutive home game, managed a season-high 24 shots, nine of them on goal, with their lone score coming courtesy of junior Weston Schumacher (Sherborn, Mass.) midway through the fourth quarter on an assist by sophomore Jon Parra-Tobey (New London, Conn.). Schumacher led Mitchell with 13 shots, six of them on goal, and added four ground balls.

The Vikings led 4-0 after the opening quarter and carried a nine goal advantage into halftime. Salem notched five more goals in the third frame before outscoring Mitchell 3-1 across the final stanza.

The Mariners found success all afternoon at the face-off, winning 15-21 attempts, as Keeano Gonzalez (New London, Conn.) registered a game-high 10 ground balls. Goalie Ethan Wheeler (0-4) made eight saves on 25 shots for Mitchell, while Trevor Gilligan picked up his first win of the season, making eight saves.

The Mariners (0-4 overall) will return to the field on Wednesday, March 8th, when they host Regis College at 3:00 pm. Salem State (1-1 overall) plays next when they host Gordon College on Friday, March 10th.
