Men’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, VT – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team dropped their season opening game on the road Friday evening, falling to Norwich University 22-0 in a GNAC tilt at Sabine Field.

15 different players scored for the Cadets, who built an eight goal lead after the first quarter and held a 15-0 advantage at the half. Mitchell McKay and Chris Smith each registered hat tricks in the win, while Duncan Youngclaus, Christian Rainis, and Case MacDonald tallied two goals apiece. Youngclaus added a team-high three assists for Norwich, who outshot the Mariners 66-4.

Mitchell struggled to gain much momentum on the offensive end and failed to get any shots off on goal. The Cadets won the ground ball battle 43-10, forced 36 Mariner turnovers, and won 21 of 25 face offs. Senior Weston Schumacher (Sherborn, Mass.) got off a team-high two shots and added two ground balls, while Jon Parra-Tobey (New London, Conn.), CJ Bradley (West Babylon, N.Y.), and Cameron Haefs (Cary, IL) also finished with two ground balls each. Haefs, a freshman, logged all 60 minutes in goal and recorded 26 saves in his collegiate debut.

The Mariners (0-1, 0-1 GNAC) will return to action on Saturday, March 2nd, when they host Centenary University in their home opener at 1:00 pm. Norwich (2-0, 1-0 GNAC) will look to make it three straight wins to begin their season when they host Plymouth State University on Wednesday, February 28th.
