Men’s Lacrosse Suffers Senior Day Setback Against Elms

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team opened up Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 15-5 loss against Elms College on Saturday afternoon. The game also served as senior day for the team, as Weston Schumacher (Sherborn, Mass.), CJ Bradley (West Babylon, N.Y.), Dylan Kinsella (Waterbury, Conn.), and Robert Campbell (Glastonbury, Conn.) were honored in a pregame ceremony.

Freshman Luciano Jordan Canino powered the Blazer's offensive attack, finishing with seven goals, while fellow freshman Ethan Menard added four goals and two assists. Sophomore Tosh Marshall chipped in two goals and an assist for Elms, who outscored the Mariners 5-0 in the second quarter, turning a tie game into a five goal deficit for Mitchell by the time intermission rolled around.

Junior Jon Parra-Tobey (New London, Conn.) registered two goals for the Mariners, while Weston Schumacher and Dylan Kinsella tallied a goal and an assist each, and sophomore Joseph Hayes (Stonington, Conn.) found the back of the net for the first time this season. Schumacher and Kinsella each added four ground balls, while CJ Bradley scooped five ground balls and junior Keeano Gonzalez (New London, Conn.) led the way with eight.

After Luciano Jordan Canino opened the scoring two minutes into the game, the Mariners answered with goals by Parra-Tobey and Hayes to take a 2-1 advantage. Tosh Marshall sent one past the Mitchell goalkeeper with 2:42 remaining in the opening quarter, and the game moved to the second stanza with the score knotted up.

The Blazers pulled away with five unanswered goals in the second quarter, including three from Ethan Menard. By the time the Mariners scored next, a Schumacher goal five minutes into the third quarter, Elms had built a 9-2 advantage. Schumacher's goal made it 9-3, but the Blazers responded with three more goals to cap the period.

Parra-Tobey added his second goal of the game with an assist by Raphael Vogt (Montville, Conn.) early in the fourth, and Kinsella closed the scoring for Mitchell with his third goal of the season in the final minutes of action.

Elms outshot the Mariners by a convincing margin of 61-24, and aided by the wet and stormy weather, forced 35 Mitchell turnovers.

Mitchell freshman goalkeeper Cameron Haefs (Cary, Ill.) logged all 60 minutes in the cage and made 16 saves.

Casey Dmochowski earned the win in goal for Elms, turning away six games.

The Mariners (0-3, 9-1 GNAC) are slated to return to action on Wednesday, March 27th, with a home GNAC tilt against Johnson & Wales University at 3:00 pm. The Blazers (2-3, 1-1 GNAC) host Salem State in a non-conference game on Wednesday, March 27th.
