Schumacher Scores Five Goals, but Men’s Lacrosse Edged by Albertus

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Weston Schumacher (Sherborn, Mass.) scored a collegiate career-high five goals for the Mitchell College men's lacrosse team on a rainy Wednesday afternoon, but the Mariners fell to Albertus Magnus College 16-9 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division showdown.

Schumacher added three ground balls for Mitchell, while junior Keeano Gonzalez (New London, Conn.) recorded the first hat trick of his collegiate career to go along with one assist, and junior Jon Parra-Tobey (New London, Conn.) added one goal for the Mariners. Sophomore Joseph Hayes (Stonignton, Conn.) dished out two assists for Mitchell in the loss.

The Falcons controlled the first quarter, building a 7-1 lead behind a hat trick by Bailey Kirwin. The Mariners adjusted in the second stanza, using a strong defensive effort to silence the Albertus offense, while chipping away at the deficit thanks to goals by Keeano Gonzalez and Weston Schumacher.

Trailing 7-3 entering the third quarter, the Mariners took less than 10 seconds to make it a 7-4 game as Schumacher potted his second goal of the game off an assist from sophomore Joseph Hayes (Stonington, Conn.). Jeremy Tremblay countered for Albertus 30 seconds later to push the Falcons ahead by four, and three more goals followed for the Falcons to give them a commanding 11-4 advantage.

Gonzalez notched his hat trick with 3:21 to go in the third, and Albertus began the fourth quarter with four unanswered goals to leap ahead 15-5. Parra-Tobey then sent one past the Albertus keeper with 9:45 on the clock, and Schumacher collected three more goals in the final minutes of the content.

Jeremy Tremblay led the Falcons with five goals and three assists, while Bailey Kirwin also tallied five goals and handed out a pair of assists.

Senior Dylan Kinsella (Waterbury, Conn.) earned the start in the cage for the first time in his career and turned back 13 shots across the 60 minutes of action.

Nick Duryea made 10 saves in the win and scooped a team-high seven ground balls for Albertus.

The Mariners (0-5,0-4 GNAC) continue conference play with a road trip to Rivier University on Saturday, April 6th, with the opening faceoff scheduled for 2:30 pm. The Falcons (3-7, 1-4 GNAC) will look to string together their first winning streak of the season when they host Lasell University on Saturday, April 6th.
