2008 All-Conference Men's Soccer Teams Announced

ATTLEBORO, Mass. - All seven sponsored programs were represented on 2008 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Men's Soccer All-Conference Team, it was announced today by Commissioner Del Malloy. In addition to the All-NECC honors, four separate major individual award winners and the team sportsmanship award were also voted upon and selected this week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Mitchell College senior forward Josh Griffo (Higganum, Conn.) fired home the game-winning goal in the 96th minute of the Mariners' 3-2 overtime victory over visiting Becker. The victory allowed Mitchell to wrap up the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record in NECC play. ROOKIE OF THE WEEK -Mitchell College freshman forward James Gleason (Old Lyme, Conn.) opened the Mariners' regular-season finale against Becker on a good note, scoring the first goal in what would prove to be a 3-2 overtime win.

October 21, 2008, NEW LONDON, CONN.--Mitchell started the game pressuring the Becker defense with seven shots on goal, but it wasn't until the 27th minute on a pass from freshman Howard Johnson (New London, CT) to freshman striker James Gleason (Old Lyme, CT) who drilled one in for the Mariners.

NEW LONDON, CT, Oct 11, 2008 - Mitchell College Men’s Soccer edged out conference rival Lesley University, 4 -3. Lesley junior striker Phil Lund (Stratford, CT) grabbed a rebound off Mitchell goalie to score the first goal of the game 3 minutes in. Mitchell was able to settle down and in the 13th minute on a cross from senior midfielder Josh Griffo (Killingworth, CT) to junior defender Adam Deltgen (Norwich, CT) who headed to Junior forward Teddy Dixon (Stratford, CT) who found the back of the net to tie the game at 1 -1.

Nashua, NH - Joel Blancafor (Haddam, Conn.) notched two scores in the first half and the Mitchell College defense limited Daniel Webster College to two shots on goal, as the Mariners edged the Eagles, 2-0 in an important mid-season NECC clash Thursday at Eagle Field.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Mitchell sophomore forward Joel Blancaflor (Haddam, Conn.) played the lead role in a 2-1 weekly record for the Mariners. Blancaflor netted two goals on the week for four points including the game winner in a tough battle against conference opponent Newbury. They defeated Emmanuel 3-2 and Newbury 4-3 while falling to Salve Regina in a close match 2-1.

NEW LONDON, CONN. Mitchell College men’s soccer took a loss Thursday afternoon to Salve Regina University. Mitchell had to play from behind as they where down 2-0 early. Mitchell put one in the net late in the second half but it wasn’t enough and the Mariners fell 2-1.

SOMERVILLE, MA - Emmanuel fell to visiting Mitchell College on Monday night in non-conference men's soccer action at Dilboy Stadium. The Saints found themselves in a hole early, as the Mariners quickly racked up two goals in the opening ten minutes of play. Emmanuel put together a late second half rally, but could hold off the Mariners, as the visitors came away with a 3-2 win.

Mitchell College went to work and settled down and was lead by Senior forward Josh Griffo (Higganum, CT) who was able to get 6 shots off but failed to find the back of the net.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK — Mitchell Mariners freshman midfielder Thomas Derosier (Killingly, Conn.) contributed to a conference victory over Elms 4-2. Derosier added an assist on the first goal against the Blazers. Against Trinity, he had two of the five shots on goal despite the Mariners’ loss 7-1.

Sept. 20, 2008- Elms College received goals from freshman midfielder Alex Rosario (Chicopee, MA) and sophomore midfielder Sam Senecal (Chicopee, MA), but Mitchell erupted for three goals in a 2:59 span late in the second half to rally for a 4-2 win over the Blazers in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Leary Field.

NEW LONDON, CONN - Joel Blancaflor (So. from Haddam, Conn.) had one goal on three shots for the Mariners while Jamie Serrano (So. from Clinton,Conn.) also had four shots with one goal. Goalie Andrew Hall (Fr. from Natick, Mass.) allowed just one goal with five saves on six shots. Chipping in for the Mariners was Howard Johnson (Fr. from New London, Conn.) and Josh Griffo (Sr. from Higganum, Conn.) had five shots a piece. James Gleason (Fr. From Woodstock, Conn.) ended with two shots and one assist. Coach Dean Roberts “we did not play one of better games but we found a way to win. Jamie Serrano was tremendous of the bench for Mitchell and game in to score the game winning goal.”

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK --Mitchell College freshman goalkeeper Andrew Hall (Natick, Mass.) recorded his first collegiate win against Regis College, leading the Mariners to a 2-1 win. He had a combined 14 saves in both games going 1-1 for the week. Mitchell faced US Coast Guard Academy in his first collegiate start in which Hall faced 19 shots and nine shots on goal to a tough 1-0 loss.
