MITCHELL COLLEGE DROPS ONE TO SALVE REGINA UNIVERSITY

NEW LONDON, CONN.  Mitchell College men's soccer took a loss Thursday afternoon to Salve Regina University.  Mitchell had to play from behind as they where down 2-0 early.  Mitchell put one in the net late in the second half but it wasn't enough and the Mariners fell 2-1.

The Seahawks came out aggressive and making strong runs to the goal.  In just the 10th minute Freshman Striker Christopher Knoth (East Islip, N.Y.) put one in the net off the corner from Senior Michael Manning (St. James, N.Y.).  Just a minute later Sophomore William Carroll (Islip, N.Y.) would take a break away down the right side and drive it into the bottom right corner of the goal to put Salve Regina up 2-0.

The Mariners would hold off the Seahawks for the remainder of the half.  Physical play would produce yellow cards for Sophomore Jim Dean (Colonia, N.J.) of Salve Regina and freshman forward James Gleason (Woodstock, Conn.) of Mitchell.  The emotion spilled over to the second half as Senior Michael Manning would pick up a second yellow for the Seahawks.

In the 71st minute a foul in the box would give Mitchell the opportunity to lift them from their 2-0 hole.  However Salve Regina's junior goalie Kurt Ginthwain (Tolland, Conn.) would make a tremendous save off the kick from Senior Josh Griffo (Higganum, Conn.).  Kurt would end with two saves off just three shots on goal by the Mariners.

Mitchell wasn't able to find the net until the 79th minute.  Junior Teddy Dixon (Stratford, Conn.) would drill a shot into the top right corner and bring Mitchell within one.  It was too little too late for the re-energized Mariners.  Salve Regina continued to control the ball and would leave with the win.  Mitchell's freshman goalie Andrew Hall (Natick, Mass.) had eight saves off ten shots on goal.

Mitchell will host conference opponent Newbury College at 1:00pm this Saturday, while the Seahawks will visit Endicott this weekend.
