Men's Soccer Falls to Bridgewater State

New London, Conn. - The Mitchell College men's soccer team lost 3-0 in its home debut on Wednesday afternoon against Bridgewater State College.

Bridgewater State (2-1 overall) scored three times in the first 23 minutes of the contest en route to the victory. Mitchell (0-2 overall) had several good scoring chances but couldn't find the back of the net.

The Bears took the early advantage when Luke Brewer scored in the 13th minute from the left side of the box. His shot found the right corner of the goal and put the Bears on the scoreboard. Teammates Simao Mendes and Mark Vercollone recorded assists on the play. Bridgewater State's second goal came less than two minutes later, as Chris Swindell found the side netting from the right side of the box.

The Mariners nearly answered in the 18th minute when sophomore James Gleason took a free kick from 20 yards out and placed it to the left corner. Bridgewater State goalkeeper Ryan Seifert made a full-extension save on the blast to keep Mitchell off the scoreboard.
The final goal of the contest came in the 23rd minute when a cross in front of the Mitchell goal deflected off a defender and into the net. The Bears held a 12-6 advantage in shots in the first half.

Mitchell's defense was better in the second half. The Mariners kept the deficit at three despite being outshot 13-7 in the stanza. Sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Woodford made seven saves in the contest, including a few of the diving variety.

Seifert finished with three saves in the game and combined with DJ Siewierski (one save) for the shutout.

Mitchell returns to action on Saturday, September 12 at Lehman. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
