NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College men's soccer team lost a 2-0 decision to Newbury College on Sunday afternoon in a conference match-up.

Andi Maska scored both goals for the Nighthawks (1-8-0 overall, 1-1-0 NECC), who earned their first victory of the season. Mitchell dropped to 2-6-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.

Newbury took an early lead when Maska netted his first goal of the season in the eighth minute. Senior Hayato Iwahori played a corner kick to the near side, where Maska flicked it on just inside the far goalpost for the score.

The Nighthawks took the 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission. Determined to net the equalizer, Mitchell came out aggressive in the second half. The Mariners outshot the Nighthawks 14-9 in the stanza but couldn't make up any ground. Mitchell's best chance came in the 70th minute when sophomore James Gleason headed a cross that banged off the crossbar.

Maska struck again in the 87th minute to seal the victory. He settled a ball at the top of the box and blasted a shot into the top-right corner of the goal for the tally.

Mitchell finished with a 22-14 edge in shots, though Newbury earned a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Newbury goalkeeper William McNally made nine saves to record the clean sheet. Sophomore Kevin Woodford made two saves in goal for the Mariners.

Mitchell will next host Emmanuel College on Wednesday, October 7 at 4 p.m. Newbury will play at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday, October 6 at 7 p.m.
