Men's Soccer Shut Out at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Mitchell College men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season by a 5-0 final against crosstown rival Coast Guard on Wednesday afternoon.

Coast Guard's Brett Godiksen had his first career hat trick, scoring three times in the second half, to lead the way. Godiksen entered the season with just one career goal but increased his team-leading total to five this season.

Coast Guard improved to 7-0 all-time against Mitchell and 3-1-0 on the season. The Mariners saw their three-game unbeaten streak to start the season snapped as they fell to 2-1-1 overall.

The Bears, who scored just 12 goals in 17 games last season, have already found the back of the net 10 times in the 2011 season. John Rendon scored the first goal of his career in the 21st minute, the only tally in the first half as the Bears led 1-0 at the intermission.

Godiksen scored in the 50th, 53rd, and 64th minutes in the second half for the Bears, who dominated the play in both halves. Rendon assisted on Godiksen's first two goals while Conor Regan notched his first career assist on the third and final goal. Nate Borders tallied his first career goal in the 79th minute with Juan Fitzpatrick picking up his first career assist to close the scoring.

Coast Guard outshot Mitchell 29-4, including 19-3 in the second half. Carlos Gonzalez, making his collegiate debut, made three saves to register the shutout. Mitchell senior Kevin Woodford had seven saves in the first 66 minutes and freshman Ramazan Sinani added three saves in the final 24 minutes of action.
