Men's Soccer Falls 4-0 to Springfield

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team dropped a non-conference match to Springfield College on Wednesday afternoon by a final of 4-0 at Alumni Field.

After a scoreless first half, Springfield (8-1-3 overall) netted four goals over the final 45 minutes of regulation in a contest that was played in a steady rain. The Pride held a 28-5 advantage in shots and a 21-4 edge in corner kicks.

Scott Saucier scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute off a feed from Alex Reilly, who started the play by dribbling toward goal near the right end line. He crossed the ball in front of the net to the far post, where Saucier was waiting to finish for his second goal of the season.

The Pride didn't waste time adding to the lead, as Danny Amato scored in the 57th minute and David Chessen tallied in the 61st. Chessen provided the helper on Amato's goal, splitting the defense with a long pass down the middle of the field. Amato caught up to it in stride and blasted a shot into the right corner of the goal for the 2-0 lead. Chessen later contributed the highlight of the game, volleying a failed clear out of mid air from 18 yards out and skipping it off the left post en route to the back of the net.

Springfield added its fourth goal in the final minutes of regulation, with Zach Dutter slipping a pass through the Mitchell back line to Eric Stalsburg for a clean look at the goal. Stalsburg connected on his attempt and picked up his second goal of the season.

Brett Bascom and Chris Walton split time in goal for the Pride and combined to make two saves in the shutout effort. Freshman Ramazan Sinani got the starting nod for the Mariners and finished with a season-high nine saves.

Mitchell (3-7-1 overall) returns to conference play against Newbury College on Saturday, October 15 at 2 p.m.
