Men's Soccer Lands Four on NECC All-Conference Second Team

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Four members of the Mitchell College men's soccer team were named to the NECC All-Conference Second Team, as announced by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday afternoon.

Seniors James Gleason and Kevin Woodford were repeat selections while juniors Howie Johnson and Michael Berthiaume earned the distinction for the first time in their careers. A total of 23 student-athletes were named to all-conference teams, and all selections were determined by a vote of the conference coaches.

Gleason, a forward, earned all-conference honors for the third time in his career. He started and played in 16 games and led the Mariners in scoring with nine goals and four assists for 22 points. He also scored a pair of game-winning goals and finished with three multi-goal games on the year.

Woodford also garnered all-conference status for the third time in his career. The three-year starter in goal played in 15 games this season and recorded three shutouts, two of which came in conference play. He finished the year with a 1.80 goals against average and a save percentage of .742.

Johnson was a member of Mitchell's defense and played in all 17 games while making 16 starts. He contributed one goal and tied for the team lead with four assists for a career-high six points.

Berthiaume, a midfielder, started and played in all 17 matches and recorded a pair of goals for four points. He also netted Mitchell's most crucial goal of the season, providing the only score in a 1-0 win over Becker College on the final day of the regular season that qualified the Mariners for the 2011 NECC Championship.

Mitchell's season came to an end in the first round of the NECC Championship with a 5-3 loss to eventual champion Lesley University. The Mariners finished the year with an overall record of 5-11-1 (3-5-0 NECC).
