Men's Soccer Wins Season Opener at Anna Maria

PAXTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team opened the 2012 season with a 3-0 victory over Anna Maria College in non-conference action on Saturday at AMCAT Field.

Mitchell (1-0-0 overall) had three different goal scorers on the day. Sophomore Frank Williams netted the only goal the Mariners would need in the 15th minute, and junior transfer Zachary Simmons added another before the halftime intermission. Senior Michael Berthiaume rounded out the scoring with less than eight minutes remaining in the contest to seal the victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ramazan Sinani made five saves to secure his first career shutout. The Mitchell defense limited the AMCATS to only five shots in the second half and 15 in the contest.

The Mariners scored their first goal off an AMCAT defensive miscue, as Williams dribbled in an unassisted goal at the 14:19 mark. Mitchell doubled its lead in the 32nd minute when Simmons converted a pass from sophomore Jordan Derosier inside the right post.

Berthiaume put the game out of reach in the 83rd minute as he put back a rebound off AMCAT goaltender Andrew Dahl. Dahl made the initial save off a shot by Zach Rocheleau, but the rebound popped out too far and Berthiaume capitalized.

Dahl replaced staring goaltender Elliot Kuzma, who left with an injury, in the first half. Dahl had six saves in the loss.

Mitchell returns home to host Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday, September 4 at 4 p.m.
