Men's Soccer Loses 3-1 to Albertus Magnus

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 final to Albertus Magnus College in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Stephen Zapata scored a goal and assisted on two others as the Falcons (8-1-1 overall) stretched their unbeaten streak to seven games. Albertus Magnus held a commanding 21-6 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks for the match.

The Falcons wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Nick Hamasian scored his fifth goal of the season just 5:03 into the contest. Albertus earned a corner kick and Zapata played a ball to the near post where Hamasian flicked it home.

Mitchell (3-3-0 overall) tied the game in the 25th minute on a brilliant free kick by sophomore Frank Williams. Williams lined up the kick from just outside the box and drilled a shot that bent around the Albertus wall and snuck inside the right post for his second tally of the season.

Albertus took the lead back in the 32nd minute after earning a free kick of its own. Zapata served up a ball from near the left corner flag that Chris Long headed in for his first goal of the season. The Falcons took the 2-1 advantage into the halftime intermission.

Zapata added a goal in the second half on a penalty kick, beating Mitchell keeper Ramazan Sinani for his sixth goal of the season. Sinani faced pressure the entire match and finished with eight saves. Albertus goalkeeper Donato Piroscafo recorded one save in the match.

Mitchell will next play at Elms College on Saturday, September 29 at 3:30 p.m.
